Yale College Writing Center

Frequently Asked Questions about the online scheduler for tutoring

1. Are the Residential College Tutors and the Bass Writing Tutors the same?

Yes; two names, same tutors

2. Who can see the tutors?

All Yale College Undergraduates may see the tutors; Grad Students, click here:

http://www.yale.edu/graduateschool/writing/consultations.html

3. Do I have to create a new account every year?

No, only when there is a major update to the software.

4. May I see any tutor I wish?

Many years of experience have shown that you will become a better writer if you see the same tutor regularly during your undergraduate years. We strongly encourage you to do so. You may, however, see any tutor you wish, based on availability.

5. How far in advance may I book an appointment?

You may book an appointment one week in advance.

6. My appointment was rejected because I was over my limit. What ARE the limits? Also, I typed a long explanation of what I wanted to work on and now that text has disappeared.

The limits are: no more than 2 appts per day; no more than 60 minutes per day; no more than 3 appts per week; no more than 90 minutes per week. Also, one tutor, Bill Storandt in Davenport, does not allow 15-minute appts. As for your text disappearing, the system only saves information when it actually creates an appointment. We know it’s frustrating to have to redo your work and hope that it won’t happen now that you understand the limits.

7. May I take my work to another tutor for a second opinion?

No. As in #4 above, you will become a better writer by consistently working with the same tutor. Also, tutoring is a much-loved, but limited, resource at Yale. Shopping a project to more than one tutor limits other students' chances of getting help.

8. I tried to cancel my appt but couldn’t. Why not?

You may cancel any appt that’s more than 12 hours away. If you think that your paper is not quite ready, we encourage you to keep the appointment and talk to your tutor about developing your ideas further. Your tutor can still help you, no matter where you are in the process. If you absolutely must cancel an appt within 12 hours, then you must email your tutor. NEVER choose to just not show up; that wastes the tutor’s time and takes away time from your fellow students.

9. None of the available times work for me; what can I do?

You can always email your tutor and ask if any other times are available; this works best if you have previously met with this tutor. You can also visit the Writing Partners at the Writing Center, 35 Broadway (building entrance at the rear: walk between Mory’s and Toad’s from York St). They work Sun-Fri from 3-5pm and Sun-Thu from 7-9pm; this term’s first session is at 3pm, Sunday, January 22, 2012. This service is walk-in, first-come, first-served.
